Maria possesses, or is possessed by, an intense sense of curiosity which leads her constantly to search for new artistic experience. As a result she works in watercolour, pastel, oils and acrylic and on a broad spectrum of subject matter.

She has been a regular participant in the Open Studios events and her work has caused many visitors to comment on its diversity. It’s almost, they say, as if six different people were exhibiting at the same time … under the same name.

Her work ranges from delicately accurate line and wash paintings of Greek Orthodox churches to colourful African primitives and from Impressionist still life to powerful abstracts. Her most recent work focused more on graphite drawings of great detail.

Maria is one of a group of rather talented artists who meet regularly at the Kamares Club where they exchange ideas, discuss styles, go on field trips in search of new material and generally have a good time doing what they love best - painting.

She paints under her maiden name of Volschenk, a name which translates as ‘full measure’ and was handed down by an otherwise forgotten 17th century Norwegian ancestor who ran a pub south of Oslo. The name suits Maria rather well since she really has always lived life to the full – and still does.

Although essentially self taught, she did short courses in both Umbria and at Lake Como in Italy, the latter under the tutelage of Jerry Freesia. She also learned a lot from Elli Lestas, a Masters Graduate of Goldsmiths in London as well as from John Booth, retired Head of the Drawing Department at Eton College.

Directions: From the Hospital Roundabout, head up the road towards the District Post Office. Almost opposite you will see the signpost for Anavargos towards the right. After the right turn, proceed around the bend and take the next road to the right which is a cul de sac. Etheridge Studio is the second-last house on the right.
